A short 2-hour session in which two common types of Diabetes are discussed.
The disease is explained in a clear and interesting way and students will be
given the opportunity to use a Glucometer for blood glucose testing.
Session outline
Ø Defining diabetes; an overview of how the body utilises sugar
Ø Causes of diabetes and statistics
Ø Recognition of type I and type II diabetes
Ø Managing diabetes; medication types used by diabetics
Ø Introduction to Glucagon and glucose gels
Ø Measuring blood glucose
Ø First aid action - treatment of hypoglycaemia
Ø Emergency procedures for hypo and hyperglycaemia
Ø Practical management scenarios and practice session
Ø Questions and overview
Learning outcomes
This is a short, practical session in which individuals with responsibility of care for those with
diabetes will become more aware of the disease and the emergency treatment of it. By the end of
the session participants will:
ü Understand diabetes in its two most common forms and its effects on those who suffer
ü Be able to manage hypoglycaemia and administer emergency medication where necessary
ü Recognise the need for an emergency response
